Schottelkotte, James E. Beloved husband of Shirley (Kraft) Schottelkotte. Loving father of David Schottelkotte, Kathleen Schottelkotte, Stephen (Vicki) Schottelkotte and Julia (Tim) Taylor. Devoted grandfather of Michael (Jessica) Schottelkotte, Robert (Molly) Schottelkotte, Madelyn, Samuel and Luke Taylor, Christin Garcia and Kaylyn Morris. Great grandfather of Thomas and Clara Schottelkotte. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Albert W. and Venetta (Mentrup) Schottelkotte, brother Albert J. Schottelkotte, stepmother Hilda Koch Schottelkotte and stepsister Janet Heil. Passed peacefully surrounded by family on Aug. 6, 2018. Age 88. Mr. Schottelkotte held various editorial positions in a 45-year career with The Cincinnati Enquirer, including nine years as Sports Editor and six years as Managing Editor. He was elected to the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists Hall of Fame in 1995. He was a graduate of the Elder High School class of 1948, Xavier University in 1952, and he earned a master’s degree in history from Miami University in 1987 following two years there as a visiting instructor in journalism. An Army veteran, he served as an intelligence analyst and an editor of instructional material at the Army's combat intelligence school at Fort Riley, KS. For nearly 40 years, he was Sports Illustrated magazine’s special correspondent in Cincinnati and a regular contributor. Active in journalism circles, he was a co-founder and first president of the Ohio Sports Writers Association, a past president of the Associated Press Society of Ohio and was a chairman or vice chairman of four different study committees for the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME). At the Enquirer, he provided a first opportunity at the metropolitan level for a number of outstanding young journalists. In later years, he served as a mentor at Western Hills High School for the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative, was a board member of the Friends of the William Howard Taft House and a member of the selection committee for the LaRosa’s High School Sports Hall of Fame. Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 10 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, 3155 Harrison Ave., Westwood, followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin of Tours Church, Cheviot. Burial with military honors at Spring Grove Cemetery.
